Polytan LigaTurf RS+ in Fafalieio Stadium in Vrontados, Chios/Greece
Football matches with a view of the Aegean
Chios is one of the group of East Aegean islands. It is the fifth largest island in Greece, and the capital of the same name is within view of Turkey’s west coast.
The small coastal town of Vrontados is now considered a suburb of the capital. The view far out over the Aegean Sea enjoyed by the up to 3,000 spectators from Fafalieio Stadium is absolutely inspiring. The arena was built in 1975 and underwent extensive renovations in 2006. In the process, the athletics track was realised with Polytan Rekortan BS in combination with Polytan Rekortan M, and the football pitch in between was equipped with our LigaTurf. PolyPlay SE – our all-round surface with an even, non-slip surface – was used in the neighbouring basketball court.
The turf covering was then renewed in July 2021. The elastic layer under the old turf was in very good condition and will continue to provide constant shock absorption values and optimal protection for players underneath the new synthetic turf system. Most of the old synthetic turf was also in very good condition, which meant it could be donated to the municipality of Chios to meet the needs of several schools on the island.
The old turf was replaced with our LigaTurf RS+ synthetic turf system, which is prized by professional and amateur players alike. LigaTurf RS+ CoolPlus has proved its value as the preferred surface for the Women’s World Cup in Canada, for example, when it was used in the final match at the BC Place stadium in Vancouver. Investors from the Fafalios family also chose our world-leading product with FIFA Quality Pro certification for Fafalieio Stadium. The turf fibre, with a fibre thickness of 360 μm, fulfils the highest requirements for shock absorption, ball roll and ball bounce behaviour over a long lifetime.
The project was realised by Sportechniki – Gina Hatzinikolaou – in partnership with the local construction company Iakovos Psorras.
